
The Investigative Journalism Bureau in partnership with The Chiefs of Ontario (COO) is seeking two motivated undergraduate or graduate student interns to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact investigative reporting and research on issues affecting First Nations communities. These positions are available on a full-time or part-time basis and offer a competitive salary.
Successful candidates will work under IJB reporters and the Strategic Advocacy Manager and the Director of Policy and Communications at COO.
LOCATION: Hybrid – Toronto, ON & Home Office
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an investigative intern, you will work alongside reporters at the Investigative Journalism Bureau and COO leadership in the Policy and Communications Sector to conduct in-depth research, assist with interviews, and draft content related to critical issues affecting First Nations, such as healthcare, infrastructure, and government policies. You will play a key role in gathering data, conducting interviews, and presenting findings that aim to promote public policy reform and raise awareness about systemic inequities.
This internship will focus on journalistic research and writing around major public interest issues directly impacting First Nation communities in Ontario. The successful candidates will assist in:
- Researching investigative stories including conducting interviews
- Filing freedom of information requests
- Gathering public records from courts and government departments
- Interviewing sources
- Conducting online database research
- Filing regular story memo updates detailing research findings
- Interns are expected to regularly contribute to drafting stories and research reports
First Nation students are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours during peak periods, such as assembly seasons and out-of-town meetings. Travel will also be necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be academically strong, and either be trained in investigative journalism techniques or show a keen interest in learning them. Though not required, preference will be given to reporters with a First Nations background and/or experience reporting in First Nation communities. This position requires strong research skills, focus and writing skills. Special consideration will be given to those with experience shooting and editing videos, recording and editing audio, or data journalism.
- Pursuing post-secondary degree in a related field: Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous work in communications or media fields, with demonstrated expertise in communication strategy, media relations, and public relations
- Experience with social media, press releases, and media relations
- Knowledge of First Nations traditions, cultures, and values, and an understanding of the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Capacity to work effectively independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks and projects
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to evolving communication strategies and emerging technologies
- Knowledge of photography, filming, and media production skills to create high-quality content
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, and Canva for design and video editing tasks
- Website management experience, including proficiency with platforms such as WordPress and Squarespace
- Dedicated work ethic, organizational skills
- Creativity in finding, interpreting and understanding complex information
- Good oral and written communication
- Information management
- Excellent writing and organization
- Interviewing and fact-checking skills
DURATION: One-year fixed-term contract, beginning on the date of hire
Remuneration: Each position offers total compensation of $45,000 for the year, with the final amount subject to variation based on availability and specific work schedules.
