Canada’s leading investigative journalists gathered for a recent panel to explore the future of the industry. Moderated by veteran journalist Julian Sher, the conversation delved into the challenges facing the industry and the essential role of investigative journalism in a functioning democracy.
The closure of hundreds of local newspapers and the dismantling of investigative units at nearly all but a few major outlets have left Canadian journalism at a crossroads. Even flagship programs like CTV’s W5 have been axed, raising urgent questions about the future of investigative reporting in the country.
The discussion, cosponsored by the Canadian Association of Journalists, PEN Canada, and the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Journalism Research Centre, brought together leading voices in investigative journalism:
- Rob Cribb, investigative reporter and IJB founder and director
- Allya Davidson, executive producer of CBC’s the fifth estate,
- Marie-Maude Denis, host of Radio-Canada’s Enquête
- Cecil Rosner, investigative journalist with the Winnipeg-based Investigative Journalism Foundation.
