The IJB is hiring an investigative reporter to cover First Nations issues

Organization: The Investigative Journalism Bureau (IJB) is an impact-driven, collaborative newsroom, bringing together professional and student journalists, academics and media organizations to tell deeply reported stories in the public interest. In its three years, the IJB’s collaborative model has consistently produced ground-breaking, impactful and award-winning investigative work that has informed and enlightened millions of Canadians, inspired debate and influenced public policy.

Opportunity: The IJB is seeking applications for a contract investigative reporting position. The reporter will work on major investigations into issues affecting First Nations communities in Canada.

Eligibility: A mid-career journalist or researcher with experience in investigative reporting or research. Demonstrated experience working with First Nations communities or reporting on First Nations issues and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently are assets. Those with a solid understanding of First Nations issues and affairs are strongly encouraged to apply.

Length of contract: Six months. Possibility for renewal depending on funding.

Start date: Early- to mid-January preferred.

Location: Toronto preferred but flexible. Some travel may be required.

Remuneration: Salary range from $30,000 to $40,000, commensurate with experience. 

The Contractor shall provide the following services to the IJB: 

  1. Conduct original research, interviews, writing and reporting on investigations into issues affecting First Nations communities;
  2. Work with IJB reporters and our partners involved in the investigations; 
  3. Assist with student reporters, writing and other editorial work associated with the investigations;
  4. Help to coordinate editorial strategies with professional journalists, editors and media partners.

The Contractor shall provide such services competently and efficiently and in accordance with applicable service standards.
