At the Investigative Journalism Bureau, our mission is to produce both stellar journalism and stellar journalists. Our commitment to empowering young and mid-career reporters includes initiatives that train and nurture the next generation of investigative journalists to produce in-depth accountability stories, inform and enlighten the public and drive positive change. With relationships extending from academia to national news corporations, the Bureau provides a kaleidoscope of perspectives and opportunities for engagement in public interest journalism.

IJB/Unifor Summer Internships
Each year, the Investigative Journalism Bureau hires two emerging journalists for a five-month intensive internship. The IJB/Unifor Summer Interns will work with our team on groundbreaking investigations and receive close mentorship from distinguished reporters. It is among the best-paid summer journalism internships in the country, with each intern receiving a $13,000 salary. Together, we're building a legacy and quickly becoming a top-choice destination for the best young journalists in the country. Read MoreBlack Journalist Fellowship
This six months-long IJB fellowship provides a unique opportunity for an early-career Black journalist with one-to-five years’ experience to work on impactful investigations that affect tangible change. With mentorship from the IJB’s seasoned reporters, the selected fellow will hone their investigative skills and receive a full-time stipend ($35,000), paid in instalments on the 15th and last day of every month. Created in partnership with the Canadian Journalism Foundation, the Black Journalist Fellowship commits to amplifying Black voices, improving the coverage of Black issues in the news and cultivating future Black media leaders.

The IJB routinely hosts journalism students from across North America who choose to do their credit-based internships with us conducting real world investigative research. Students from schools across Canada -- including Toronto Metropolitan University, York University, University of King's College, UBC and Carleton University -- have earned credits on IJB investigative stories. They have been joined in the past by students in journalism programs across the U.S. including Stanford, Missouri, CUNY and Syracuse.

This unique full year opportunity allows students at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law to gain practical understanding of the judicial procedures behind the high-profile investigations at the IJB. Under the guidance of IJB Director Robert Cribb and Toronto Star lawyer Justin Manoryk, students will review articles for defamation and privacy risks, conduct legal research, support the filing of Freedom of Information requests and assist with the drafting of court materials.

This year marked a milestone for the Investigative Journalism Bureau with the success of our first-ever cross-border conference in partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors. The event brought together a diverse group of attendees, from passionate students to some of the world’s most esteemed investigative reporters to discuss the issues currently shaping journalism in Canada and beyond. Among the many highlights were the panel discussions, featuring industry giants such as Pulitzer Prize winners David Cay Johnston, Pultizer Prize-winning journalist Connie Walker, investigative reporting legend Ron Nixon of the Associated Press and Nicole MacIntyre, editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star. These sessions inspired dialogue and provided invaluable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of investigative journalism.
